Will Sarah Palin Get a Second Chance at the Presidency?

Sarah Palin is a woman who makes things happen and would be a great addition to the federal government, from what I found would make an excellent president.

Sarah Palin was born on February 11, 1964 making her to be 44, and has already been the youngest governor in the United States and the only woman to become governor of Alaska.

Sarah Palin takes a tough stand on wasteful spending and high taxes, when she was on the city council in 1992 in Wasillia she vowed to cut both. She reduced her own salary and even cut property taxes by 40%., showing us she knows what needs to be done and is not afraid to do it.

Sarah Palin ran for governor in 2006, without the mud slinging and she spent far less then her opponent and still won! That was when she was 42, and she was the youngest to hold this position in the country.

Sarah Palin has strongly supported oil resource development in her home state. In light of the high gas prices up there, she wanted to send people a hundred a month to offset those cost, but that measure failed so she instead proposed to send them all 1,200 dollars a year to offset the cost. Again, she is helping the little person, and not big business.

Sarah Palin, is not above firing those who need to be replaced. When the dairy board wanted to close in Alaska, she knew it would hurt the farmers, so she fired them all. The new board of directors reversed the decision to close the creamery and thousands of Alaskan farmers and other people in the state benefited from this move.

Sarah Palin is a take-charge kind of woman and she is exactly what is needed to turn this country around. It would be quite awesome to see her become president after McCain is through with the office.

Sarah Palin won a beauty contest, placed second in the Miss Alaska pageant, and won a scholarship to college where she studied Political science. She was active in basketball in high school, and her family ran in races often. She does have the winning combination of beauty and brains, and she brings this to the office.

Sarah Palin is an only child of Sarah, a school secretary and Charles, a science, and track teacher. She was born in Idaho but the family moved to Alaska when she was an infant.

Sarah Palin married Todd on August 29 1988, and on their 20 wedding anniversary she was nominated for the vice presidency of the United States. Talk about a wedding anniversary present! They were also high school sweethearts who married.

Sarah Palin is the mom of five children, two boys, Track who is 18 and in the Army, Trig who was born April 2008. She and Todd also have three daughters, Bristol who is 17, Willow who is 13, and Piper who is seven. Within three days of having Trig early, she was back to work, and is applauded for choosing to have him knowing he has Down’s syndrome. This says a lot about her as a mom, and a woman that she is not afraid of hard work, as being a mom of a special needs child can be exhausting.


Will Sarah Palin Get a Second Chance at the Presidency?

In order to decide if Sarah Palin has a second shot at the US presidency, one must believe that she had any shot all. John McCain thrust Sarah Palin into the national spotlight with an ill-conceived and premature judgment call. In all likelihood, McCain was begging for women’s votes. Recall that he chose Sarah Palin right after Hillary Clinton dropped out. The ploy was obvious. But, to paraphrase John McCain in the debates, “Sarah Palin is not Hillary Clinton.” Given John McCain’s clear desperation, even that early in the game, one assumes that neither McCain nor Palin were White House bound.

Let’s give the Republican running mate a slide and say that Sarah Palin was in legitimate running for Vice President. Her “roguish” behavior and her inability to form simple sentences should disqualify her from future presidential consideration. Oh, wait for it, who can forget our current leader of the free world. Apparently, sentence formation is not a disqualifying criterion. Even so, Palin’s aerial gunning, bride of Bloomingdales, Joe-Six-Pack, “First Dude, and unbridled gullibility (think punked and French President Sarkozy) perhaps indicate that she is too much a woman of the people. The question must be asked, “Do we want (another) creature of such rabid self-interest, shooting off her big mouth on the world stage, from the podium of this country? Sarah Palin may not even survive her political ambitions in Alaska.

Moving forward to a terrible future in which Sarah Palin either is chosen as a running mate and the candidate wins the Presidency or in which Palin is voted “First Babe,” imagine possible scenarios. Sarah Palin, through fortune’s whim, is President of the United States of America! The deficit, finally brought by President Obama into numbers that human beings can comprehend, is catapulted into whatever comes after “trillion.” The reason? Madame President’s exclusive wardrobe. With jewelry made from endangered whale bones, gloves designed out of the tiny pelts of baby seals and wolf pups, and a unique facial treatment that relies on ground elephant tusks and tiger eyes (the actual eyes), the cost of maintaining Ms. Palin has bloated the Federal budget beyond redemption. There are the awkward and unsolicited winks at Ayatollahs and other Muslim clerics. There’s a fatwa on our President’s head. The First Dude and the President of France come to blows over the good lady’s honor and the first Saturday of every odd-numbered month is keg night at the White House. Former President George Bush is in charge of the pump. Gotta keep a good foam-to-beer ratio. Of course, every American looks forward to the televised coast-to-coast witch hunts and exorcisms of demon liberals.

In a rational universe, Sarah Palin will fade and recede like the polar icecaps. Is the universe rational? Ask Schrodinger’s Cat. Does Sarah Palin has a second chance at the US presidency? Of course she does. With the right big money, a wink and a nod, anyone can be President of the United States of America.

While no one can argue that Sarah Palin brought a certain freshness to the Presidential Campaign, with it she also encountered much bias that men never encounter. Did anyone ask Obama how much his shoes cost or how often he went shopping? Maybe they should have asked how much time he spends playing basketball. That is as relevant to being President as the questions put to Sarah Palin.

When will women in politics be measured by their accomplishments rather than their wardrobe? After seeing how Sarah was raked across the coals for absurd things such as clothing and shopping, this is something that needs dire attention. Women need to receive the same respect and be held accountable for the same things.

She has a lot of options now that she did not have prior to accepting the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee. For instance, just by signing with the Washington Speakers Bureau, Palin will be the most sought after speaker on the American lecture circuit overnight.

With that said, I do think that Sarah Palin will run for President of the United States. Depending on how happy the citizens of the United States are with the job that President Elect Obama does, the time may be ripe for Sarah Palin to run. The fact that a minority achieved Presidency, which in itself is an accomplishment, will be a benefit to a woman seeking the position of President. We tend to swing from one extreme to the other in the United States.

I think the main thing is that Sarah Palin will have to remain in sight and active within the lower 48 states. She will have to have some goals to achieve and show that she is able to meet those goals for the U.S. citizens. I think that it is a trust issue that people will have to actually see that she will do what she sets out to do. This will give her a big boost in seeking the Presidency.

As pointed out, she needs to really study up on U.S. politics and world geography. She is very smart and needs to know her stuff because they will constantly test her knowledge of these things. The more she knows the better off she will be.

Sarah Palin comes from a modest background and knows what it is like to have to work for what she has. She was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth. That really appeals to voters like myself.

I definitely think that Sarah Palin has a chance to become President of the United States. Timing is everything. She would take care of women’s rights, special needs children, keep a Christian perspective, and put the United States back on the map as a country not to be reckoned with. She appeals to political conservatism because she embraces Christian beliefs. Sarah Palin’s Christian background is something that Christians who hold the Bible to be the absolute truth are looking for. She is not afraid to speak out about her beliefs about God and Christian beliefs. I find that quality very appealing.


In America your always given second chances and former vice president candidate Sarah Palin will be afforded that as well. Palin for many was a fresh face with new ideas that energized many from her party, but also alienated some of the old school people who still are not ready for change. Most likely Palin will head back to Alaska and finish being Governor and a run at the White House looks to be in her cards again. This powerful Governor from Alaska learned a lot on the campaign trail from what you can say and what you cannot. Many times she did not realize how cruel the press or people can be, but now she has a firm grasp on the situation and what she will need to do to make a run at White House.

Sarah Palin now understands what it takes to make the push to get to the highest office in the land and behind the scenes she is probably planning her moves so when the time is right she will announce it. The Republican party right now is in disarray and is the perfect time for Sarah Palin to lay the ground work for a run at the White House. Many people though were not happy with some of the things she did and mending some fences inside the party will be Palin’s first order of business. Throughout the campagin for vice-president she was tagged with the name Diva which she will need to overcome if she wants the masses of people to give her a second look. American people want someone they can identify with and once she appeals to a larger group of people her popularity will soar even higher than it already is.

Politics is a very funny business and Sarah Palin now understands that and what sacrifices she will need to make to become the next President Of The United States. She will have an uphill battle, but the one thing we learned about Palin is she is a fighter and works hard for things she believes in. Americans are a very forgiving Nation and will give her the second chance she wants. The next move will be up to her and how she proceeds with it. Look for a new improved Sarah Palin to hit the campaign trail in the next couple of years. The experience she gained this year will go a long way in defining who she will be in the future. Just as Barack Obama before her Sarah Palin can make history as well. I know I would not bet against this small dynamo from Alaska who came out of nowhere to be a household name in just a few months. Remember the name Sarah Palin as she could be the next President Of The United States.

Consequences of Obamacare

The consequences of Obamacare that are beginning to be felt, even before its provisions are implemented: Caterpillar said Obamacare will cost it an additional $100 million in the first year; Medtronic warned that the new tax on its products "could force it to lay off a thousand workers;" Verizon told its employees that it "will likely have to cut healthcare benefits to offset the new costs;" and AT&T announced that it will record a $1 billion non-cash expense in the first quarter and "will be evaluating prospective changes to the active and retiree health care benefits offered by the company."

These announcements are the tip of the iceberg; hundreds like them will follow as Obamacare becomes a reality. Congressional Democrats, evidently stung by the bad publicity, are trying to strike back.

The true cost of ObamaCare. But it gets better: the Dems are now shaking down CEOs who don't get with the program. In the attached letter, Henry Waxman not only orders the CEOs of AT&T, Caterpillar, Deere & Co, and Verizon to testify before the Energy and Commerce Committee, but also to produce internal analyses and emails related to their statements. They don't expressly subpoena the CEOs, so we can hope that they tell the Dems to GFY, though somehow I doubt that will happen.

The Dems sent these letters to the Republicans on the committee after 6pm tonight with no advance notice or prior cooperation.


I wondered why these companies had not spoken out sooner, when it could have done some good. I suppose this is the answer: they know how vindictive the Democrats are. The Democrats' reaction would have been even more hostile (and more dangerous to the companies' well-being) if they had dared to blow the whistle on Obamacare before Congress voted.

Kennedy, Chappaquiddick, and American public life

We are enjoined not to speak ill of the dead. But, when an entire nation – or, at any rate, its "mainstream" media culture – declines to speak the truth about the dead, we are certainly entitled to speak ill of such false eulogists. In its coverage of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's passing, America's TV networks are creepily reminiscent of those plays Sam Shepard used to write about some dysfunctional inbred hardscrabble Appalachian household where there's a baby buried in the backyard but everyone agreed years ago never to mention it.

In this case, the unmentionable corpse is Mary Jo Kopechne, 1940-1969. If you have to bring up the, ah, circumstances of that year of decease, keep it general, keep it vague. As Kennedy flack Ted Sorensen put it in Time magazine:

"Both a plane crash in Massachusetts in 1964 and the ugly automobile accident on Chappaquiddick Island in 1969 almost cost him his life …"

That's the way to do it! An "accident," "ugly" in some unspecified way, just happened to happen – and only to him, nobody else. Ted's the star, and there's no room to namecheck the bit players. What befell him was … a thing, a place. As Joan Vennochi wrote in The Boston Globe:

"Like all figures in history – and like those in the Bible, for that matter – Kennedy came with flaws. Moses had a temper. Peter betrayed Jesus. Kennedy had Chappaquiddick, a moment of tremendous moral collapse."

Actually, Peter denied Jesus, rather than "betrayed" him, but close enough for Catholic-lite Massachusetts. And if Moses having a temper never led him to leave some gal at the bottom of the Red Sea, well, let's face it, he doesn't have Ted's tremendous legislative legacy, does he? Perhaps it's kinder simply to airbrush out of the record the name of the unfortunate complicating factor on the receiving end of that moment of "tremendous moral collapse." When Kennedy cheerleaders do get around to mentioning her, it's usually to add insult to fatal injury. As Teddy's biographer Adam Clymer wrote, Edward Kennedy's "achievements as a senator have towered over his time, changing the lives of far more Americans than remember the name Mary Jo Kopechne."

You can't make an omelet without breaking chicks, right? I don't know how many lives the senator changed – he certainly changed Mary Jo's – but you're struck less by the precise arithmetic than by the basic equation: How many changed lives justify leaving a human being struggling for breath for up to five hours pressed up against the window in a small, shrinking air pocket in Teddy's Oldsmobile? If the senator had managed to change the lives of even more Americans, would it have been OK to leave a couple more broads down there? Hey, why not? At the Huffington Post, Melissa Lafsky mused on what Mary Jo "would have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history … Who knows – maybe she'd feel it was worth it." What true-believing liberal lass wouldn't be honored to be dispatched by that death panel?

We are all flawed, and most of us are weak, and in hellish moments, at a split-second's notice, confronting the choice that will define us ever after, many of us will fail the test. Perhaps Mary Jo could have been saved; perhaps she would have died anyway. What is true is that Edward Kennedy made her death a certainty. When a man (if you'll forgive the expression) confronts the truth of what he has done, what does honor require? Six years before Chappaquiddick, in the wake of Britain's comparatively very minor "Profumo scandal," the eponymous John Profumo, Her Majesty's Secretary of State for War, resigned from the House of Commons and the Queen's Privy Council and disappeared amid the tenements of the East End to do good works washing dishes and helping with children's playgroups, in anonymity, for the last 40 years of his life. With the exception of one newspaper article to mark the centenary of his charitable mission, he never uttered another word in public again.

Ted Kennedy went a different route. He got kitted out with a neck brace and went on TV and announced the invention of the "Kennedy curse," a concept that yoked him to his murdered brothers as a fellow victim – and not, as Mary Jo perhaps realized in those final hours, the perpetrator. He dared us to call his bluff, and, when we didn't, he made all of us complicit in what he'd done. We are all prey to human frailty, but few of us get to inflict ours on an entire nation.

His defenders would argue that he redeemed himself with his "progressive" agenda, up to and including health care "reform." It was an odd kind of "redemption": In a cooing paean to the senator on a cringe-makingly obsequious edition of NPR's "Diane Rehm Show," Edward Klein of Newsweek fondly recalled that one of Ted's "favorite topics of humor was, indeed, Chappaquiddick itself. He would ask people, 'Have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?'"

What do you call 200 Kennedy sycophants at the bottom of a Chappaquiddick pond? A great start, but bad news for NPR guest-bookers! "He was a guy's guy," chortled Edward Klein. Which is one way of putting it.

When a man is capable of what Ted Kennedy did that night in 1969 and in the weeks afterward, what else is he capable of? An NPR listener said the senator's passing marked "the end of civility in the U.S. Congress." Yes, indeed. Who among us does not mourn the lost "civility" of the 1987 Supreme Court hearings? Considering the nomination of Judge Bork, Ted Kennedy rose on the Senate floor and announced that "Robert Bork's America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit down at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens' doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution."

Whoa! "Liberals" (in the debased contemporary American sense of the term) would have reason to find Borkian jurisprudence uncongenial but to suggest the judge and former solicitor-general favored resegregation of lunch counters is a slander not merely vile but so preposterous that, like his explanation for Chappaquiddick, only a Kennedy could get away with it. If you had to identify a single speech that marked "the end of civility" in American politics, that's a shoo-in.

If a towering giant cares so much about humanity in general, why get hung up on his carelessness with humans in particular? For Kennedy's comrades, the cost was worth it. For the rest of us, it was a high price to pay. And, for Ted himself, who knows? He buried three brothers, and as many nephews, and, as the years took their toll, it looked sometimes as if the only Kennedy son to grow old had had to grow old for all of them. Did he truly believe, as surely as Melissa Lafsky and Co. do, that his indispensability to the republic trumped all else? That Camelot – that "fleeting wisp of glory," that "one brief shining moment" – must run forever, even if "How To Handle A Woman" gets dropped from the score. The senator's actions in the hours and days after emerging from that pond tell us something ugly about Kennedy the man. That he got away with it tells us something ugly about American public life.

I happened to be in the Rockies National Park today and what did my eyes behold? The American Flag at half staff in honor for the scum of the earth “Killer” Ted Kennedy. The bastard did everything he could to stay out of combat. Had Daddy Crook Kennedy pull strings to get his four year enlistment cut to two year, and then have him posted to a nice safe country. Makes me sick!

Now the Democrats and all his Liberal cronies are using his death as a back stabbing method to get Obamacare passed. Why don’t we call the Pope and see if we can’t get made a saint now. What a load of crap. The man was useless, he took credit for much that others before him did like the Civil Rights Act.

God, put the snake in the ground, and not ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY! He deserves be put in a whole there less than anyone I can think of. At least his brother did serve his country. Not like the Killer is nothing more than disgrace to every brave American who did, honorably serve their country! Hell, put in a trash pit! Let the other rats feed off of him.

The only people who will miss the bastard are illegal immigrants, welfare recipients and lobbyist who lined his pockets. Get him in the ground and let’s forget about the whole rotten clan!

Sen. Henry Waxman it appears he is not happy in not getting his way with Obamacare. Now he has sent a letter to 52 of the leading insurance companies asking them to disclose details about what their exec’s make, where they go, what they eat, and some of their business models. How low is this Whore House in Washington going to go to get this Obamacare bill shoved down the throats of the American public?

The Democrats are bound and determined to get what has to be one of the most unpopular pieces of legislation into law, come hell or high water. They just don’t believe that the American people don’t want any part of Our Dear Leader, Comrade , Obamacare plans.

They don’t want any part of the U.S. Census Bureau counting ILLEGAL ALIENS in the 2010 Census. The American people just don’t understand how the people who are WELL PAID (over paid) who were elected to represent them, have become so corrupt and so ignorant. How is that they DON’T UNDERSTAND A SIMPLE WORD LIKE “ILLEGAL“?

Don’t they understand we don’t want the government involved in health care! Hell, they hold the VA system up as “The Gold Standard” for health care in this country. Anyone who has been to a VA knows what a joke this is. It can takes weeks to get someone to return a call. Every time you call for an appointment, you get the nice little voice mail message: “I’m away from my desk, but your call is very important to us. Please leave your name, time you are calling, etc, etc”. And then you might just as well go away on vacation.

If these idiots in Washington look into ridiculous salaries, why don’t they look into any professional sport. Only there can a person get a complete free ride to college, come out as stupid as they went in and make multi-million dollars to PLAY a sport. Plus the endorsement they earn. They are paid to play a sport! A part time job! Get arrested, no problem, you’re special, get out of jail.

When is America going to get it’s act together, get The Whore House under control and start putting its priorities in order? For the salary of one baseball or football player you could solve the education problems. For the money that cities pump into building stadiums you could pay for a a heck of a lot of health care. Leave the companies who have built on the American dream and start hitting up these sports “STARTS” and over priced ACTORS. Let’s get real America!

My biggest fear is that the American people have a very short memory. The elections are over a year away for these members of the Whore House. We have got to keep these issues alive so come election day, we toss all of the snakes into the trash where they belong!

And I just saw on the news where “Killer Ted” Kennedy wants to bypass the laws of MA by doing away to allow him to appointment his own replacement instead of having an election to fill his seat. Damn, what an ego! He should be spending his last remaining days in a prison hospital where he will get excellent care. It would also give him time to ponder the death of the woman, Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy pushes his weight around for illegal aliens.

Killer Kennedy-Jackass Thank your Sen. Edward Kennedy, (D-MA) for asking Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chetoff to release arrested illegal aliens. You know Kennedy. He is the drunken coward who killed a Mary Jo Kopechne back in back in 1969. Well I digress.

On March 6th 2007 the Michael Bianco Inc. factory got a visit from ICE. During that visit some 361 suspected illegal aliens were detained. Interestingly, the factory had a large US government contract for equipment and clothing for our troops. Many of those detained by ICE were sent to Texas detention centers. Then a federal judge stepped in and ordered the remaing illegals to remain in MA for “humanitarian” reasons. Meaning they had kids with them. Harry Spence, Commissioner of Social Services went to visit the nice, illegal, folks in Texas and held interviews with them. Seems Mr. Spence and his cronies thought it best that 21 of the detained illegals be returned to MA. Immigration officials in TX were releasing 9 of the 21 Teddy wanted back.

Now for “Killer Ted“. He sent a letter to Michael Chertoff asking that ALL of the illegals detained in Texas be returned to MA for “supervised release“. Just what the hell is that? Are they going to be given state paid companions to keep track of them?

Luckily for America, Russ Knocheof Homeland Security notified “The Killer” that the “department has to enforce the law and added at least 20% of the immigrants” taken in the raid “had already received deportations orders”. Mr. Knochewent on to add “we will enforce the law and we will continue to do so in an aggressive and sensible way. Not enforcing the law is not an option”.

I say BRAVO to Mr. Knoche for standing up for the laws of the land and doing his job despite pressure from Kennedy and others.

Now the rub. Commissioner Spence wants the children between 2-16 (and some with special medical conditions) released. Why you might ask? Because… ready for it? All were believed born in the US therefore they are U.S. Citizens! This is another loop hole that congress has got to close. Some illegal comes up, gives birth on the U.S. taxpayers dollar and suddenly the child is legal. Ridiculous, you bet. Another Spence wants returned is a woman with cancer. Again, the U.S. tax payer is stuck with the bill.

Health care reforms are turning into health care revolts. Americans are turning up the heat on congressmen in town hall meetings across the U.S.

While watching these political hot August nights, I decided to research the reasons so many are opposed to Obamacare to separate the facts from the fantasy. What I discovered is that there are indeed dirty little secrets buried deep within the 1,000-plus page health care bill.

Dirty secret No. 1 in Obamacare is about the government's coming into homes and usurping parental rights over child care and development.

It's outlined in sections 440 and 1904 of the House bill (Page 838), under the heading "home visitation programs for families with young children and families expecting children." The programs (provided via grants to states) would educate parents on child behavior and parenting skills.

The bill says that the government agents, "well-trained and competent staff," would "provide parents with knowledge of age-appropriate child development in cognitive, language, social, emotional, and motor domains ... modeling, consulting, and coaching on parenting practices," and "skills to interact with their child to enhance age-appropriate development."

Are you kidding me?! With whose parental principles and values? Their own? Certain experts'? From what field and theory of childhood development? As if there are one-size-fits-all parenting techniques! Do we really believe they would contextualize and personalize every form of parenting in their education, or would they merely universally indoctrinate with their own?

Are we to assume the state's mediators would understand every parent's social or religious core values on parenting? Or would they teach some secular-progressive and religiously neutered version of parental values and wisdom? And if they were to consult and coach those who expect babies, would they ever decide circumstances to be not beneficial for the children and encourage abortions?

One government rebuttal is that this program would be "voluntary." Is that right? Does that imply that this agency would just sit back passively until some parent needing parenting skills said, "I don't think I'll call my parents, priest or friends or read a plethora of books, but I'll go down to the local government offices"? To the contrary, the bill points to specific targeted groups and problems, on Page 840: The state "shall identify and prioritize serving communities that are in high need of such services, especially communities with a high proportion of low-income families."

Are we further to conclude by those words that low-income families know less about parenting? Are middle- and upper-class parents really better parents? Less neglectful of their children? Less needful of parental help and training? Is this "prioritized" training not a biased, discriminatory and even prejudicial stereotype and generalization that has no place in federal government, law or practice?

Bottom line: Is all this what you want or expect in a universal health care bill being rushed through Congress? Do you want government agents coming into your home and telling you how to parent your children? When did government health care turn into government child care?

Government needs less of a role in running our children's lives and more of a role in supporting parents' decisions for their children. Children belong to their parents, not the government. And the parents ought to have the right -- and government support -- to parent them without the fed's mandates, education or intervention in our homes.

Kids are very important to my wife, Gena, and me. That's why we've spent the past 17 years developing our nonprofit KICKSTART program in public schools in Texas. It builds up their self-esteem and teaches them respect and discipline. Of course, whether or not they participate in the program is their and their parents' choice.

How contrary is Obamacare's home intrusion and indoctrination family services, in which state agents prioritize houses to enter and enforce their universal values and principles upon the hearts and minds of families across America?

Government's real motives and rationale are quite simple, though rarely, if ever, stated. If one wants to control the future ebbs and flows of a country, one must have command over future generations. That is done by seizing parental and educational power, legislating preferred educational methods and materials, and limiting private educational options. It is so simple that any socialist can understand it. As Josef Stalin once stated, "Education is a weapon whose effects depend on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed."

Before so-called universal health care turns into universal hell care, write or call your representative today and protest his voting Obamacare into law. Remind him that what is needed in Washington is a truly bipartisan group that is allowed an ample amount of time to work on a compromise health care law that wouldn't raise taxes (for anyone), regulate personal medical choices, ration health care or restrict American citizens.

Simple alternative plan can cure Obamacare’s ills

In 1986, Ronald Reagan and Bill Bradley created a legislative miracle. They fashioned a tax reform that stripped loopholes, political favors, payoffs, patronage and other corruptions out of the tax system. With the resulting savings, they lowered tax rates across the board. Those reductions, combined with the elimination of the enormous inefficiencies and perverse incentives that go into tax sheltering, helped propel a 20-year economic boom.

In overhauling any segment of our economy, the 1986 tax reform should be the model. Yet today's ruling Democrats propose to fix our extremely high quality (but inefficient and therefore expensive) health care system with 1,000 pages of additional complexity — employer mandates, individual mandates, insurance company mandates, allocation formulas, political payoffs and myriad other conjured regulations and interventions — with the promise that this massive concoction will lower costs.

This creates a Rube Goldberg system that simply multiplies the current inefficiencies and arbitrariness, thus producing staggering deficits with less choice and lower-quality care. That's why the administration can't sell Obamacare.

Let me offer a simple alternative: radical tort reform and radically severing the link between health insurance and employment.

(1) Tort reform: As I wrote recently, our crazy system of casino malpractice suits results in massive and random settlements that raise everyone's insurance premiums and creates an epidemic of defensive medicine that does no medical good, yet costs a fortune.

An authoritative Massachusetts Medical Society study found that five out of six doctors admitted they order tests, procedures and referrals — amounting to about 25 percent of the total — solely as protection from lawsuits. Defensive medicine, estimates the libertarian/conservative Pacific Research Institute, wastes more than $200 billion a year. Just half that sum could provide a $5,000 health insurance grant — $20,000 for a family of four — to the uninsured poor (U.S. citizens ineligible for other government health assistance).

What to do? Abolish the entire medical-malpractice system. Create a new social pool from which people injured in medical errors or accidents can draw. The adjudication would be done by medical experts, not lay juries giving away lottery prizes at the behest of the liquid-tongued John Edwardses who pocket a third of the proceeds.

The pool would be funded by a relatively small tax on all health-insurance premiums. Socialize the risk; cut out the trial lawyers. Would that immunize doctors from carelessness or negligence? No. The penalty would be losing your medical license. There is no more serious deterrent than forfeiting a decade of intensive medical training and the livelihood that comes with it.

(2) Real health-insurance reform: Tax employer-provided health benefits and return the money to the employee with a government check to buy his own medical insurance, just as he buys his own car or home insurance.

There is no logical reason to get health insurance through your employer. This entire system is an accident of World War II wage and price controls. It makes people stay in jobs they hate, decreasing labor mobility and therefore overall productivity. And it needlessly increases the anxiety of losing your job by raising the additional specter of going bankrupt through illness.

The health care benefit exemption is the largest tax break in the entire U.S. budget, costing the government a quarter-trillion dollars annually. It hinders health-insurance security and portability as well as personal independence. If we additionally eliminated the prohibition on buying personal health insurance across state lines, that would inject new and powerful competition that would lower costs for everyone.

Repealing the exemption has one fatal flaw, however. It was advocated by candidate John McCain. Obama so demagogued it last year that he cannot bring it up now without being accused of the most extreme hypocrisy and without being mercilessly attacked with his own 2008 ads.

But that's a political problem of Obama's own making. As is the Democratic Party's indebtedness to the trial lawyers, which has taken malpractice reform totally off the table. But that doesn't change the logic of my proposal. Go the Reagan-Bradley route. Offer sensible, simple, yet radical reform that strips away inefficiencies from the existing system before adding Obamacare's new ones — arbitrary, politically driven, structural inventions whose consequence is certain financial ruin.
